Why Does a Violin Bow Still Use Hair From a Horse?
A modern violin may contain precision strings and synthetic materials, yet its bow is usually fitted with a ribbon of real horsehair.
A violin bow commonly holds between 160 and 180 hairs, arranged side by side between the tip and the adjustable frog. Tail hair is used because it is long, strong, flexible, and capable of surviving repeated tension and motion.
Horsehair alone does not grip a violin string strongly enough to create a full musical tone. Musicians rub the hair with rosin, a solid material traditionally made from tree resin. The hair holds tiny particles of rosin, giving its surface the friction needed to catch a string.
As the bow moves, the string alternately sticks to the rosined hair and slips free. This rapid repetition causes the string to vibrate. The violin body then amplifies those vibrations into the sound heard by the audience. Changing bow pressure and speed alters the cycle and therefore the character of the note.
Hair eventually stretches, breaks, becomes dirty, or stops holding rosin effectively. A specialist removes it and installs a new ribbon, a procedure known as rehairing. Synthetic bow hair exists and works well for some players, but many professional musicians continue to prefer horsehair for its response and familiarity.
The bow does not make music simply by rubbing the string. It performs a controlled sequence of microscopic grips and releases, made possible by horsehair carrying powdered tree resin.
