Why Do Reindeer Eyes Turn Blue in Winter?
Reindeer do more than grow a winter coat. The reflective tissue inside their eyes changes color with the seasons, shifting from golden in summer to deep blue during the Arctic winter.
Behind the retina lies a mirrorlike layer called the tapetum lucidum. Many nocturnal animals possess this structure, which reflects light back through the retina and gives visual cells another opportunity to detect it. It is also responsible for the bright glow seen when headlights illuminate an animal’s eyes.
In Arctic summer, reindeer live under nearly continuous daylight. Their tapetum appears golden and reflects much of the incoming light directly back out of the eye. Winter produces the opposite challenge. The sun may remain below the horizon for weeks, leaving only dim, bluish twilight.
Researchers found that prolonged winter darkness causes a reindeer’s pupils to stay dilated. This changes pressure inside the eye and compresses the tapetum’s collagen fibers. The altered spacing scatters light differently, turning the tissue blue. Instead of reflecting light neatly outward, the winter eye scatters more of it through the retina, increasing sensitivity at the cost of some visual sharpness.
Reindeer can also detect ultraviolet light, which is abundant in Arctic twilight and reflected strongly by snow. Objects such as urine, fur, and certain foods may appear with greater contrast against the landscape.
The famous animal of Christmas stories therefore undergoes a real seasonal transformation. Its most remarkable winter change is not its antlers or coat, but a living mirror inside each eye adjusting itself to months of darkness.
