Why Do Mature Sunflowers Stop Following the Sun?
Young sunflowers appear to watch the sky. Their growing heads face east in the morning, turn west during the day, and return east before dawn. Yet when the flowers mature, this daily movement stops. Most adult heads remain facing east.
The movement of young plants is produced by unequal growth in the stem. During the day, cells on the east side grow more quickly, turning the head westward. At night, growth shifts to the opposite side, bringing the plant back toward the sunrise. An internal circadian clock coordinates the cycle, so the sunflower can begin repositioning even before the light changes.
Once stem growth slows and the flower opens, constant tracking is no longer useful. Researchers at the University of California, Davis found that a permanent eastern orientation offers another advantage. East facing flower heads warm faster in the morning sun. Bees, already beginning their daily search for nectar and pollen, visit these warmer flowers more frequently.
Experiments supported the connection. When researchers turned mature sunflowers westward, the plants received fewer early visits. Artificially warming west facing flower heads increased bee attention, suggesting that temperature was an important part of the attraction. Eastern orientation also affected pollen development and reproductive success.
A mature sunflower is therefore not frozen in place because it has lost the ability to follow the sun. It has reached a different stage of its strategy. The young plant follows daylight to support growth. The adult stops at sunrise, turning its face into a warm morning signal for pollinators.
