Why Was the Eiffel Tower Allowed to Remain Standing?

The Eiffel Tower was not guaranteed a permanent place in Paris. Its survival depended partly on proving that it could do something more useful than attract visitors.

The tower was completed for the 1889 Paris Exposition. Gustave Eiffel received permission to operate it on public land for twenty years, after which ownership would return to the city. Many writers and artists had condemned the iron structure, and demolition after the permit expired remained a genuine possibility.

Eiffel understood that scientific value could protect his tower. He allowed researchers to use it for experiments involving air pressure, wind resistance, gravity, and physiology. Its height made it especially valuable for the emerging technology of wireless telegraphy. In 1898, Eugène Ducretet transmitted radio signals between the tower and the Panthéon. Later experiments achieved communication across much greater distances.

The French military recognized that the tower could serve as an enormous radio mast. Its equipment helped communicate with forts and ships, and its strategic importance became particularly clear during the First World War. The tower also assisted with intercepting enemy messages.

By the time the original land agreement expired, Paris possessed something more valuable than an exhibition monument. It had a uniquely tall platform for communication and research. Radio gave officials a practical reason to preserve a structure that aesthetics alone might not have saved.

One of the world’s most recognizable landmarks remained standing because it found a second occupation as an antenna.
