What Creates the Sound When You Crack Your Knuckles?
The cracking sound from a knuckle is not produced by bones grinding together. It comes from a rapid change inside the fluid filled space of the joint.
The ends of the bones are enclosed by a flexible capsule containing synovial fluid. This liquid lubricates the joint and contains dissolved gases.
Pulling or bending a finger increases the space between the joint surfaces. Pressure inside the capsule falls. At a critical point, a gas filled cavity suddenly forms within the fluid. This rapid event, called cavitation, produces the familiar pop.
For many years, explanations focused on a bubble collapsing after it formed. Magnetic resonance imaging later allowed researchers to watch the process in real time. The sound appeared as the joint surfaces separated and a cavity emerged, not when that cavity later disappeared.
After a knuckle cracks, it usually cannot be cracked again immediately. The joint must return toward its previous condition before another cavity can form. This recovery period often lasts several minutes.
Studies have not found convincing evidence that habitual knuckle cracking causes arthritis. However, forceful manipulation can irritate tissue, and pain or swelling during joint movement deserves more attention than an ordinary painless crack.
Other joint sounds can have different causes. Tendons may move across bones, rough surfaces may rub, or small changes may occur in cartilage. Not every click in a knee, shoulder, or jaw is the same event as a cracking knuckle.
The pop is therefore a miniature pressure phenomenon. By separating two joint surfaces, a person causes dissolved gas to create a cavity so abruptly that the surrounding tissue vibrates loudly enough to hear.
