Why Can Birds Sit on Power Lines Without Being Electrocuted?
A bird sitting on one power line may be surrounded by high voltage, but voltage alone does not force a dangerous current through its body.
Electric current flows when there is a difference in electrical potential and a complete path between those potentials. A bird placing both feet on the same wire has almost the same voltage at each foot. With no meaningful voltage difference across its body, very little current has a reason to leave the wire and pass through the bird.
The situation changes immediately if the bird touches something else. If one wing reaches another wire carrying a different voltage, the body can connect the two. If the bird touches the wire and a grounded pole or transformer casing, it may provide electricity with a route toward the ground. Current can then pass through its tissues, causing severe injury or death.
This is why large birds are at greater risk around electrical equipment. Their wingspans make it easier to bridge separate conductors. Utilities sometimes alter equipment spacing or install protective covers in areas where eagles and other large species are frequently electrocuted.
A human hanging from one wire without touching anything else would be governed by the same principle, but approaching the wire safely is another matter. A person usually reaches it from a ladder, pole, or ground connected equipment, creating the missing path.
The bird is protected not by special insulation, but by occupying only one electrical location at a time.
