Why Does a White Crown Appear Around the Sun During a Total Eclipse?

During a total solar eclipse, the Moon covers the bright face of the Sun. Daylight fades, the sky darkens, and a pearly white crown appears around the black circle. That crown was present all along.

It is the corona, the outer atmosphere of the Sun. The corona extends millions of kilometers into space, but it is normally hidden by the much brighter solar surface, called the photosphere.

The Sun is about four hundred times wider than the Moon, but it is also about four hundred times farther away. This remarkable coincidence makes both objects appear nearly the same size in our sky. During totality, the Moon can therefore cover the photosphere while leaving the wider corona visible.

The corona contains streamers, loops, and pale rays shaped by the Sun’s magnetic fields. Its appearance changes with solar activity. Despite looking delicate, it can reach temperatures above one million degrees Celsius, making it far hotter than the visible surface below.

Scientists use instruments called coronagraphs to block the Sun inside telescopes, creating artificial eclipses. However, Earth’s atmosphere scatters sunlight and makes the innermost corona difficult to observe clearly. A total eclipse briefly provides a cleaner natural view.

The eclipse does not create the white crown. The Moon simply removes the overwhelming brightness that normally prevents us from seeing the Sun’s vast outer atmosphere.

Special eye protection is required whenever any portion of the bright solar surface remains visible.
