Why Do Autumn Leaves Reveal Colors That Were There All Summer?
Many yellow and orange pigments seen in autumn leaves are not newly painted onto the tree when the weather becomes cold. They were present during the growing season but hidden beneath a stronger green signal.
Leaves appear green because they contain large quantities of chlorophyll, the pigment that helps capture light for photosynthesis. Chlorophyll absorbs much of the red and blue light striking a leaf while reflecting more green light toward our eyes.
Chlorophyll is not permanently stable. A healthy leaf continually produces and replaces it. As days shorten and temperatures fall, deciduous trees prepare to abandon leaves that would be costly and vulnerable during winter. Chlorophyll production slows, and the existing pigment breaks down.
Once the green fades, carotenoid pigments become visible. These produce many of the yellows and oranges also found in carrots and other plants.
Red and purple colors have a somewhat different story. Pigments called anthocyanins are often produced in leaves during autumn from sugars trapped there. Bright light and cool nights can encourage their formation, although the exact display depends on species and weather.
Before a leaf falls, the tree recovers useful materials, including much of its nitrogen. A separation layer forms near the base of the stem, gradually closing the connection between leaf and branch.
The autumn display is therefore part revelation and part new production. Yellow may emerge from behind disappearing green, while red can be manufactured during the leaf’s final weeks.
The tree is not decorating leaves before discarding them. We are watching pigments become visible as the tree dismantles its seasonal system for collecting sunlight.
