Why Do Bananas Grow Curved Instead of Straight?
A young banana does not begin as the familiar curved fruit seen in stores. Its shape develops as the fruit changes its direction of growth.
Bananas grow together in clusters on a large flowering structure. The heavy cluster hangs downward from the plant, and the young fruits initially point toward the ground. As they develop, however, they begin growing upward.
Plants can adjust growth in response to gravity, a behavior called gravitropism. Roots generally show positive gravitropism by growing in the direction of gravity. Shoots usually do the opposite, growing away from gravity so they can reach open space and light. Developing bananas also turn upward against gravity.
The fruit does not rotate as a completed object. Cells on different sides grow at different rates, gradually bending each banana while it lengthens. Because the base remains attached to the hanging cluster while the tip turns upward, the fruit develops its characteristic curve.
This explanation is sometimes simplified by saying that bananas bend toward the Sun. Light can influence plant growth, but the upward response of the fruit is more accurately described as negative gravitropism. The banana is responding to its orientation relative to gravity, not carefully tracking the Sun across the sky.
Different banana varieties develop different degrees of curvature, and growing conditions can affect the final shape. Some are only gently bent, while others form a much stronger arc.
The curve is therefore not produced by packing, selective bending, or the weight of the fruit. It is a record of two directions preserved in one body: the cluster hanging downward and the growing banana turning upward.
